Wodaabe Tribe

After class the other day I really wanted to look more in depth into the Wodaabe tribe, we were briefly told about it and I loved the strong colours they use and the idea about their tribal look so I want to look into it more.

The Wodaabe Tribe are a small subgroup of the fulani ethnic group, the  majority are cattle herders. The tribe are known for their beauty, eccentric style and  their rich cultural ceremonies.  I am fascinated by this tribe because of of the beauty ceremony they hold, they normally hold it at the end of their dry season in america. In this ceremony the young men wear elaborate makeup, feathers and other ornaments. The men then get all together and start to perform the Yaake; which is a song and dance that they perform to impress the marriageable women. The ideal of male beauty in the Wodaabe tribe is; white eyes and teeth, tallness. As you can can see in this photo the men would often roll their eyes and show their teeth to try and emphasise their character.

Here is a little slide I made to show all the features the women(judges) look for within the male beauty contest.

I love the idea of this tribe making themselves more attractive to the other sex by painting their face etc. All of their faces are design in basically the same way apart from a few differences in the patterns on their face. Again I love how each of the patterns are painted on the face for a certain reason i.e to make their teeth look whiter or to make their nose more streamline, it is extremely clever. I also love how it's mainly the men that do beauty contest and that the women judge cause in our culture it's the other way round. I want to play around with the idea of painting on the face to accentuate peoples features.
